House Republicans\u00a0officially impeached Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday<\/a>, the culmination of years of pushing a right-wing conspiracy theory that alleges nefarious forces \u2014 in this case, Mayorkas, but also the Biden administration more broadly \u2014 are facilitating an immigrant \u201cinvasion\u201d of the United States.<\/p>\n

The invasion rhetoric draws directly from the white supremacist \u201cgreat replacement\u201d theory, which\u00a0claims<\/a>\u00a0liberals (often Jewish liberals like George Soros) are encouraging mass migration to alter a country\u2019s demographic makeup and to diminish white conservatives\u2019 political power. The conspiracy theory\u00a0has been promoted by several mass shooters<\/a>, including the gunman who killed 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018.<\/p>\n

So it comes then as no surprise that several Jewish groups would denounce the House\u2019s impeachment as another vehicle to normalize white nationalist views.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the advocacy group Jewish Council on Public Affairs, denounced the Mayorkas impeachment,\u00a0writing<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cOver and over again we see members of Congress play politics with the lives of immigrants and asylum seekers while further normalizing antisemitic, white supremacist conspiracy theories and extremism. We\u2019ve seen the deadly consequences of the \u2018invasion\u2019 and \u2018replacement\u2019 rhetoric that underpinned this impeachment effort \u2014 directly fueling violence in Charlottesville, Pittsburgh, Poway, El Paso, Buffalo, and beyond. This dehumanizing bigotry puts all our lives at risk, yet House leaders once again cynically doubled down on it to score political points while making our communities less safe.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/section>\n

Spitalnick reiterates\u00a0a statement\u00a0<\/a>her organization coordinated and signed with 17 other Jewish advocacy groups last week that also highlighted the white nationalism underlying the Mayorkas impeachment.\u00a0And she has experience pushing back against \u201cgreat replacement\u201d bigotry on the right: She\u00a0led a legal organization<\/a>\u00a0that helped win civil judgments for victims of the 2017 deadly white supremacist riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, where right-wing thugs chanted \u201cJews will not replace us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The contrived impeachment articles allege that the DHS secretary has \u201cwillfully and systemically refused to comply\u201d with immigration laws, a claim that\u00a0has no basis in reality<\/a>. And Republican House members\u2019 near-universal support for this impeachment shows how a white supremacist talking point has\u00a0been mainstreamed in the conservative movement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Outside of this procedural sideshow, several GOP lawmakers have gotten quite comfortable spreading \u201cgreat replacement\u201d talking points, including Georgia\u00a0Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/a>\u00a0(who said on Fox News that \u201cDemocrats are going to bring in millions and millions of illegals and turn them into Democrat voters.\u201d) and\u00a0Freedom Caucus back-benchers like Michigan Rep. Matt Maddock<\/a>\u00a0(who recently held a news conference with a \u201cDemocrat Border Invasion\u201d sign).<\/p>\n

So as Republicans try to give their impeachment push against Mayorkas a veneer of legitimacy, never forget that\u00a0it\u2019s rooted in racist schlock scraped from right-wing message boards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
