{"id":8807,"date":"2023-09-21T17:39:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T17:39:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jewishpublicaffairs.org\/?p=8807"},"modified":"2023-09-21T18:03:42","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T18:03:42","slug":"ny-daily-news-op-ed-the-lesson-of-history-hate-neo-nazis-twist-rhetoric-into-deeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jewishpublicaffairs.org\/news\/ny-daily-news-op-ed-the-lesson-of-history-hate-neo-nazis-twist-rhetoric-into-deeds\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Daily News Op-ED &#8211; THe lesson of history &#038; hate: Neo-Nazis Twist rhetoric into deeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Amy Spitalnick<br \/>September 17, 2023<\/p>\n<p>When Mayor Adams claimed that the influx of asylum seekers to New York \u201cwill destroy\u201d the city,\u00a0extremists were soon celebrating his comments \u2014 including leading neo-Nazi hate website the Daily Stormer, which welcomed the mayor\u2019s \u201cbased\u201d and \u201cinsightful\u201d words.<\/p>\n<p>This would be disturbing enough on its own. But what\u2019s worse is that the mayor should know better, because we\u2019ve seen this story before \u2014 and we know precisely where such rhetoric can lead.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Stormer founder Andrew Anglin and his LLC were defendants in a lawsuit spearheaded by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.integrityfirstforamerica.org\/our-work\/case\/charlottesville-case\">my prior organization<\/a>, holding them accountable for the white supremacist violence they orchestrated in Charlottesville in August 2017.<br \/>Fueled by deeply xenophobic, antisemitic, and racist conspiracy theories about immigrants replacing and destroying our society (see: \u201cJews will not replace us!\u201d), Anglin and his co-defendants conspired to bring deadly violence to Charlottesville \u2014 leading to the murder of Heather Heyer and extensive injuries. In November 2021, they were all found liable by a jury, which awarded our plaintiffs multi-million-dollar damages.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 violence in Charlottesville didn\u2019t happen in a vacuum. In so many ways, it was enabled by increasingly bigoted political language and policies \u2014 and it previewed the cycle of extremism that\u2019s followed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pittsburgh, the deadliest-ever attack on American Jews, in which a synagogue was targeted because of its work supporting immigrants and refugees.<\/li>\n<li>Christchurch, where more than 50 Muslims were murdered by a white supremacist motivated by anti-immigrant hate.<\/li>\n<li>Poway, where a similarly-motivated white supremacist attacked a synagogue on Passover.<\/li>\n<li>El Paso, the deadliest attack on the Latino community in modern American history, committed by an extremist who believed white people were being replaced by foreigners.<\/li>\n<li>Buffalo, where Black people were murdered for \u201cthe future of the white race.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every single one of these attacks was motivated by conspiracy theories that immigrants and Black and Brown people are somehow replacing and destroying America. And as such bigoted rhetoric has moved from the dark corners of the internet to the mainstream of our politics, these extremists are only becoming more and more emboldened.<\/p>\n<p>Following Tucker Carlson\u2019s xenophobic coverage of migrants at the southern border, the Daily Stormer labeled Carlson\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/videos\/2017\/7\/21\/16008190\/strikethrough-white-supremacists-love-tucker-carlson\">literally our greatest ally<\/a>.\u201d\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n<p>After Donald Trump urged the Proud Boys to \u201cstand back and stand by\u201d in October 2020, the Daily Stormer told its readers to\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IntegrityforUSA\/status\/1311396599160070144\">get ready for war<\/a>\u201d \u2014 just months before extremists attacked the Capitol in a violent insurrection.<\/p>\n<p>These neo-Nazis know that when political figures espouse bigoted rhetoric and conspiracy theories, it helps to normalize and mainstream extremism \u2014 ultimately giving license to violence.<\/p>\n<p>So it was particularly horrifying to hear such disturbing language about asylum seekers \u201cdestroying\u201d New York from my own mayor, who leads one of the country\u2019s most diverse cities \u2014 a place where so many immigrants and refugees, including my own grandparents, were welcomed to build a new life of safety and success.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t to discount New York\u2019s very real needs when it comes to asylum seekers: from expedited work permits, to real investment in social and health services, shelter, education, and legal support, this requires every level of government to swiftly act. The mayor is right that the city can\u2019t manage this alone, and that we need deep support from federal and state partners \u2014 especially as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/08\/11\/child-death-border-custody\/\">bigoted far-right politicians continue to treat asylum seekers as political pawns, bussing them to Democratic-led cities.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But regardless of his intent, the impact of the mayor\u2019s specific words is now sadly clear thanks to the Daily Stormer, and it further jeopardizes the safety of immigrants and so many other communities at a time of record level hate crimes and domestic extremism. One only needs to look to Massachusetts, where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2023\/09\/08\/immigrants-family-shelter-system-neo-nazi-hate-group\">neo-Nazis directly targeted immigrants in the family shelter system<\/a>, marching on their hotel in black shirts and masks, carrying flares and telling the \u201cinvaders\u201d to \u201cgo home\u201d \u2014 yet another terrifying illustration of where such rhetoric can lead.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, when confronted with neo-Nazis\u2019 embrace of the mayor\u2019s comments and concerns about his words further emboldening extremists, City Hall chose to double down \u2014 attacking the Daily News for \u201celevating\u201d and \u201clegitimizing\u201d Nazis.<\/p>\n<p>Make no mistake: the only thing that legitimizes neo-Nazis here is an elected official giving voice to language that so closely tracks the same conspiracy theories that has directly fueled a cycle of extremism and violence.<\/p>\n<p>Asylum seekers are not going anywhere, and this situation requires real support and resources from all levels of government. But as the mayor continues to navigate their arrival, his words matter \u2014 and he has a fundamental responsibility not to give license to hate.<\/p>\n<p><em>Spitalnick is the CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.
