Rabbi Ari Berman, the president of Yeshiva University, delivers a benediction asking God to \u201cguide our schools and college campuses, which have been experiencing such unrest,\u201d and to \u201chear the cry of the hostages, both American and Israeli, whose pain our presidents so acutely feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later that afternoon, Elon Musk addresses a Trump rally at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, D.C. He <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/690427\/elon-musk-nazi-salute-trump-inauguration\/\">makes two stiff-armed gestures<\/a> to the crowd that match the Nazi sieg heil salute, but which the Anti-Defamation League <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/690745\/adl-elon-musk-sieg-heil-hitler-salute-nazi\/\">calls<\/a> \u201can awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump signs an executive order creating the Department of Government Efficiency and places Musk in charge of the agency, which has a broad mandate to slash spending and reshape the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2025\/01\/22\/camp-auschwitz-jan-6-rioter-trump-pardoned\/77884230007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pardons<\/a> hundreds of individuals convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, including Robert Keith Packer, who broke into the Capitol wearing a black hoodie reading \u201cCamp Auschwitz\u201d over an SS skull logo, and Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, who the Justice Department described as a white supremacist who hurled antisemitic slurs at police officers that day.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Martin, who <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LouisofMonmouth\/status\/1830635414228504972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praised<\/a> Hale-Cusanelli as an \u201cextraordinary man\u201d and \u201cextraordinary leader,\u201d is appointed as acting United States attorney for the District of Columbia and quickly fires and demotes prosecutors who had worked on Jan. 6 cases. Martin <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/714922\/ed-martin-timothy-hale-cusanelli-antisemitism\/\">later apologizes<\/a> for praising Hale-Cusanelli, saying he was unaware of the full range of his antisemitic comments.<\/p>\n<p>Sebastian Gorka, a conservative commentator with past <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/news\/366181\/exclusive-nazi-allied-group-claims-top-trump-aide-sebastian-gorka-as-sworn\/\">ties to a Nazi-aligned Hungarian group<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/22\/us\/politics\/sebastian-gorka-adviser.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">returns to the White House<\/a> as senior director for counterterrorism. Gorka, whose nomination was announced in November, is the first of many appointees with ties to far-right and white supremacist groups.<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/690820\/trump-lifts-sanctions-on-west-bank-settlers-earning-praise-from-the-israeli-right\/\">lifts sanctions<\/a> on dozens of far-right Israeli settlers and organizations that the Biden administration accused of extremist violence against Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>January 21<\/b>, the Office of Personnel Management, which oversees the federal workforce, announces Andrew Kloster as its new chief counsel. Kloster, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pogo.org\/investigations\/raging-misogynist-now-federal-government-h-r-s-top-lawyer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-described<\/a> \u201craging misogynist,\u201d once <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/surcomplicated.bsky.social\/post\/3lgv3uuv56k2e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> on Twitter that \u201cHollywood is populated with Kabbalists\u201d who are \u201ctrying to suck the life force from men.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sponsored-content\"><\/div>\n<p>On <b>January 23<\/b>, Musk \u2014 who never directly denied that he had performed a Nazi salute \u2014 posts a series of Nazi-related puns on X, including \u201cDon\u2019t say Hess to Nazi accusations!\u201d and \u201cBet you did nazi that coming \ud83d\ude02.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time the ADL <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/691039\/elon-musk-makes-holocaust-jokes-after-netanyahu-defends-him-as-great-friend-of-israel\/\">scolds<\/a> Musk: \u201cThe Holocaust is not a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On <b>January 25<\/b>, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/01\/25\/trump-israel-bomb-shipment-hold-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lifts a hold<\/a> placed by former President Joe Biden on the delivery of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>January 27<\/b>, the Office of Management and Budget <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.rid.58912\/gov.uscourts.rid.58912.161.0_4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issues a memo<\/a> freezing all federal grants, including nonprofit security grants for Jewish institutions administered through FEMA. Synagogues and other Jewish organizations report that they stop receiving reimbursements for previously approved expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The Secure Community Network, the security arm of the Jewish federations network, says it expects the funds to eventually be released but has <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2025\/03\/jewish-security-grants-in-limbo-amid-fema-funding-freeze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no idea<\/a> when that will happen. SCN <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2025\/01\/secure-community-network-kristi-noem-nomination-department-of-homeland-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously endorsed<\/a> Kristi Noem, Trump\u2019s pick to run the Department of Homeland Security, which manages the grants.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Jewish organizations \u2014 including synagogues and community relations councils from across the country \u2014 sign <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/691807\/dozens-of-jewish-groups-protest-trumps-plans-for-mass-deportation\/\">a letter<\/a> protesting Trump\u2019s mass deportation plans, a signature part of his campaign platform that seeks to abolish birthright citizenship and remove millions of undocumented immigrants from the country. \u201cJewish families \u2014 past and present, here and elsewhere \u2014 know what it is to live in fear for the immediate and long-term safety of our families,\u201d the letter says.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>January 28<\/b>, the Defense Intelligence Agency distributes a memo announcing that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-holiday-mlk-day-pride-black-hispanic-dei-047bbdbfc12ea6e9a9731f5861d84e70#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pausing the observance<\/a> of Holocaust Days of Remembrance and other cultural events to comply with an executive order banning \u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion\u201d programs in federal workplaces.<\/p>\n<p>Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/article\/s15ve41yje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announces<\/a>that the entire Pentagon will no longer observe the Days of Remembrance or other initiatives falling under the umbrella of \u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion\u201d because they \u201cerode camaraderie and threaten operation performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On <b>January 29<\/b>, Trump signs an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/additional-measures-to-combat-anti-semitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive order<\/a>outlining \u201cAdditional Measures to Combat Anti-Semitism,\u201d relying on a hyphenated spelling of \u201cantisemitism\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/2025\/03\/13\/united-states\/breaking-with-recent-consensus-trump-makes-anti-semitism-hyphenated-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">out of step<\/a> with most Jewish groups. The order targets \u201cleftist, anti-American\u201d universities and directs federal agencies to order schools to \u201cmonitor\u201d and \u201creport activities\u201d by foreign students, staff and faculty.<\/p>\n<p>The American Jewish Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.org\/news\/ajc-statement-on-executive-order-on-additional-measures-to-combat-antisemitism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cwelcomes\u201d<\/a> the focus on antisemitism and the administration\u2019s pledge to deport visitors \u201con temporary work or student visas who have been found to provide material support or resources to designated terror organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the coming weeks, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will begin canceling thousands of student visas in the name of fighting antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump\u2019s nominee for secretary of health and human services, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/692680\/rfk-jr-confirmation-cdc-nazi-death-camps\/\">acknowledges<\/a> during his confirmation hearing that he had previously compared children with autism in the U.S. to the victims of \u201cNazi death camps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On <b>January 30<\/b>, 275 rabbis and cantors <a href=\"https:\/\/truah.org\/press\/an-open-letter-from-275-rabbis-and-cantors-to-security-community-network-ceo-michael-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sign a letter<\/a>complaining about a statement from the SCN calling on Trump to deport \u201cany non-citizen alien who supports terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need you to continue doing your crucial work to help keep Jewish communities safe. Perpetuating fear of immigrants and promoting the corrosion of the rule of law undermines this mission,\u201d clergy write in the letter, organized by T\u2019ruah.<\/p>\n<p>Dana White, the UFC CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/693091\/bryce-mitchell-hitler-holocaust-comments-dana-white\/\">announces<\/a> that he will not sanction a fighter in his mixed-martial arts league who praised the Nazis. Bryce Mitchell launched his show days earlier by saying that, based on his own research, \u201cHitler was a good guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe fought for his country. He wanted to purify it by kicking the greedy Jews out that were destroying his country and turning them all into gays,\u201d said Mitchell, who also denied the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>White, who spoke at Trump\u2019s inauguration rally, said he was \u201cbeyond disgusted\u201d by Mitchell\u2019s comments but the UFC would not take any disciplinary action against him.<\/p>\n<h2><i>\u2013<\/i> February <i>\u2013<\/i><\/h2>\n<p>On <b>February 3<\/b>, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/693967\/joe-kent-counterterrorism-center-trump\/\">nominates Joe Kent<\/a> to run the National Counterterrorism Center. \u201cThis guy is, I\u2019m not going to say neo-Nazi, but as close as you can get to that without being labeled that,\u201d says former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican. Kent, a former Green Beret, previously appeared in a YouTube video with a neo-Nazi and met with Nick Fuentes, a white supremacist and Holocaust denier. A <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidCornDC\/status\/1910003128365404420\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photo later emerges<\/a>of \u201cPANZER,\u201d the German word for tank, tattooed on Kent\u2019s bicep.<\/p>\n<p>Darren Beattie, a former Trump speech writer who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/03\/politics\/kfile-darren-beattie-state-department-controversial-tweets-white-nationalist-conference\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously fired<\/a> for speaking at a white nationalist conference, is appointed as the acting under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs at the State Department.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/news\/693919\/leo-terrell-trump-antisemitism-task-force\/\">names Leo Terrell<\/a>, a Black civil rights attorney, as the head of an interagency task force on antisemitism that includes Ed Martin, the acting U.S. attorney who praised an alleged white supremacist.<\/p>\n<p>Terrell blamed Trump for the rise in antisemitism as recently as 2020, but following his Republican conversion to \u201cLeo 2.0\u201d and the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, he became fixated on antisemitism related to protests against Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s just a great guy and a real mensch and cares deeply, deeply, deeply,\u201d says Dov Hikind, who runs Americans Against Antisemitism. \u201cI never asked him, like, \u2018Where does this come from?\u2019 \u2014 that of all the people in the world, he\u2019s going to be playing this role in the Justice Department \u2014 but he\u2019s just a good guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Terrell subsequently says that he also wants to <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/704440\/leo-terrell-antisemitism-anti-white-bias\/\">pursue a task force<\/a> on \u201canti-white bias, all this DEI nonsense, the attack on Christians, the attack on Catholics.\u201d After the president says that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has \u201cbecome a Palestinian\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/706000\/chuck-schumer-antisemitism-in-america-trump\/\">isn\u2019t Jewish anymore<\/a>,\u201d Terrell shares a social media post from a white supremacist who <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/704866\/leo-terrell-patrick-casey-antisemitism\/\">wrote<\/a> that \u201cTrump has the ability to revoke someone\u2019s Jew card.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"related-articles\">\n<p>The Department of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-education-probes-cases-of-antisemitism-five-universities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opens<\/a> investigations into allegations of antisemitism at five universities, including Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health and Human Services <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/694324\/trump-directs-health-and-human-services-to-investigate-medical-schools-for-antisemitism\/\">announces<\/a> it is investigating the medical schools at Harvard, Columbia, Brown and Johns Hopkins for antisemitism related to protests against Israel at their commencement ceremonies last spring.<\/p>\n<p>This series of investigations will ultimately lead to the suspension of billions of dollars in federal funding to Harvard and Columbia, and the threat of more grant revocations to other schools.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 4<\/b>, Trump says during a news conference at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. plans to \u201ctake over\u201d the Gaza Strip, remove its Palestinian residents and develop it as the \u201cRiviera of the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He later shares an artificial intelligence-generated video showing a \u201cTrump Gaza\u201d resort in the seaside enclave.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/691507\/trump-says-he-is-pressing-leaders-of-arab-nations-to-take-in-gaza-palestinians\/\">previously<\/a> said he wanted Jordan and Egypt to accept Palestinians living in Gaza, which those countries oppose.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 6<\/b>, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/eradicating-anti-christian-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creates<\/a> a Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian bias led by Attorney General Pam Bondi and including other senior cabinet members.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 10<\/b>, the Department of Defense releases a memo announcing that it will be purging books from schools it runs for the nearly 70,000 children living on military bases. Among the books removed is a biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/culture\/697417\/ruth-bader-ginsburg-trump-book-ban-executive-order-diversity-ideology\/\">pulled from shelves<\/a> to comply with Trump\u2019s executive order titled \u201cDefending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 11<\/b>, the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/695506\/3-of-the-largest-jewish-denominations-are-suing-the-trump-administration-over-immigration-raids\/\">sue<\/a> the Department of Homeland Security to prevent immigration raids at synagogues and other houses of worship.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ted Cruz releases a database of \u201cwoke DEI grants\u201d that <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/696241\/a-grant-to-study-hebrew-is-woke-dei-ted-cruz-says\/\">includes<\/a> funding to study the linguistic differences between Hebrew and English.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 13<\/b>, Vice President JD Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/696424\/vice-president-vance-dachau-holocaust\/\">tours the Dachau concentration camp<\/a> in Germany with his wife, Usha. \u201cIt is something that I\u2019ll never forget,\u201d Vance says.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 20<\/b>, Steve Bannon, a former top adviser to Trump, makes a stiff-armed salute that resembles the Nazi gesture at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Days later Israel365 Action, an Orthodox advocacy group, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/700585\/steve-bannon-nazi-orthodox-israel\/\">will honor<\/a> Bannon with the \u201cWarrior for Israel\u201d award. \u201cI\u2019m one of the most pro-Israel people out there,\u201d Bannon will tell the group.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 23<\/b>, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/699175\/dan-bongino-fbi-israel-soros\/\">names<\/a> Dan Bongino, a conservative ex-Fox News host, to be deputy director of the FBI. Bongino has frequently blamed George Soros for funding the \u201cdeep state\u201d and posted about Soros dozens of times since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 25<\/b>, Trump issues a memo directing the Justice Department to revoke security clearances held by members of Covington &amp; Burling and taking other actions against the law firm, which worked with Special Counsel Jack Smith during his time investigating Trump during the Biden administration. It is the first of at least six actions against law firms that Trump believes treated him unfairly.<\/p>\n<p>Eight major law firms, including Paul Weiss, Skadden, and Willkie Farr &amp; Gallagher, reached settlements with the Trump administration pledging more than $500 million in pro bono legal work on behalf of Trump administration priorities, including fighting antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>Former second gentleman Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish, now works for Willkie and says he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/01\/us\/politics\/trump-law-firm-doug-emhoff-wilkie-farr-gallagher.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposed<\/a> the deal.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>February 28<\/b>, the Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/federal-task-force-combat-antisemitism-announces-visits-10-college-campuses-experienced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announces<\/a> it will visit 10 campuses \u201cthat have experienced antisemitic incidents since October 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading-3 listicle\"><i>\u2013<\/i> March <i>\u2013<\/i><\/h2>\n<p>On <b>March 1<\/b>, Secretary of State Marco Rubio expedites the delivery of $4 billion in military assistance to Israel. \u201cIt is a welcome sign that the United States remains committed, absent qualification or caveat, to the Jewish state\u2019s ability to defend itself and maintain a qualitative military edge in the wider Middle East,\u201d the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations says in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 4<\/b>, Adam Boehler, a senior hostage negotiator for the Trump administration, breaks longstanding U.S. policy by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/10\/world\/middleeast\/trump-israel-hamas-hostages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meeting directly<\/a> with Hamas officials to secure the release of an American-Israeli hostage in Gaza. The talks are unsuccessful and Boehler, who was Jared Kushner\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2024\/12\/trump-names-abraham-accords-negotiator-adam-boehler-hostage-affairs-envoy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">college roommate<\/a>, faces outcry from Israeli officials for saying of Hamas negotiators that \u201cevery piece of a person is a human,\u201d and that he sought to find shared humanity during the meetings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re the United States, we\u2019re not an agent of Israel,\u201d Boehler <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/09\/politics\/video\/sotu-hostage-envoy-adam-boehler-says-us-could-strike-deal-with-hamas-in-weeks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tells<\/a> CNN.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 5<\/b>, popular podcast host Joe Rogan <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2025\/03\/joe-rogan-antisemitic-conspiracy-theorists-ian-carroll-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interviews<\/a>Ian Carroll, a self-described independent researcher who has spread antisemitic conspiracy theories, including that Israel was responsible for 9\/11 and that the U.S. is controlled by a \u201cZionist mafia.\u201d Rogan, whose podcast has around 20 million listeners, endorsed Trump for president and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/05\/politics\/elon-musk-rogan-interview-empathy-doge\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hosted Musk<\/a> on the show a week before Carroll.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 6<\/b>, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/701830\/well-get-them-out-trump-tells-7-released-israeli-hostages-in-oval-office-meeting\/\">hosts<\/a> a delegation of freed Israeli hostages in the Oval Office. \u201cWe\u2019ll get them out,\u201d Trump says of the 59 hostages believed to be remaining in Gaza. Khalil, a recent graduate of the school and a permanent resident of the U.S., was a leader of the pro-Palestinian protest movement on campus. Trump administration officials offered shifting justifications for his arrest, with Rubio ultimately stating that his continued presence in the country was contrary to the U.S.\u2019s foreign policy priority of opposing antisemitism. A federal judge temporarily blocked Khalil\u2019s removal from the country.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes after Khalil participated in a protest at the Barnard library days earlier and Ross Glick, a former leader of Betar US, a far-right Jewish group, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/news\/703018\/mahmoud-khalil-columbia-cuad-ice\/\">shared his name<\/a> with members of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShalom Mahmoud,\u201d the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/702979\/trump-shalom-hamas-columbia-mahmoud-khalil\/\">posts<\/a> on social media after his arrest, as it increasingly leaned on the Hebrew word as a catchphrase in its messaging around Israel and antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>Many Jewish organizations respond by condemning Khalil\u2019s politics even as they express concern about the arrest. \u201cWe must defend US Constitution without defending Khalil\u2019s vile, antisemitic, anti-American ideology,\u201d Zioness says in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Federal officials will later <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/ice-warrant-agents-detained-mahmoud-khalil-court-filing\/story?id=121141616\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admit<\/a> they did not have an arrest warrant for Khalil when they took him into custody, as he stood beside his pregnant wife, but argued his detention was justified because of \u201cflight risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>March 9<\/strong>, the ADL <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ADL\/status\/1898918587437338827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheers<\/a> Khalil\u2019s arrest and says \u201c<span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">we also hope that this action serves as a deterrent to others who might consider breaking the law on college campuses or anywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 10<\/b>, the Education Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-educations-office-civil-rights-sends-letters-60-universities-under-investigation-antisemitic-discrimination-and-harassment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sends a letter<\/a> to 60 colleges and universities who were already facing investigations related to antisemitism, most dating to the Biden administration, warning them of consequences if they do not \u201cprotect Jewish students on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 11<\/b>, Trump allies, including Laura Loomer, a far-right agitator who Trump has met with at the White House, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/703279\/judge-jesse-furman-mahmoud-khalil-loomer-trump\/\">attack<\/a> federal judge Jesse Furman and his wife for siding with Khalil in an early court hearing. \u201cBoth of them are Leftist Jews,\u201d Loomer, who is also Jewish, wrote on X. \u201cAlong with Jihadists, Leftist Jews are some of our biggest enemies in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/news\/706276\/education-department-shut-down-civil-rights-antisemitism\/\">implements<\/a> mass layoffs, including firing 250 of the 550 employees in its Office for Civil Rights, which investigates allegations of campus antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 17<\/b>, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/705994\/donald-trump-reportedly-expressed-affection-for-fiddler-on-the-roof-at-kennedy-center-meeting\/\">describes<\/a> <i>Fiddler on the Roof<\/i> as one of his favorite Broadway shows while visiting the Kennedy Center after firing its board and appointing himself chairman.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 21<\/b>, Columbia agrees to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/nyregion\/columbia-response-trump-demands.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sweeping changes<\/a> in a bid to restore federal funding. They announce plans to ban masks, create a campus police force that can arrest students, adopt a definition of antisemitism that prohibits discrimination based on someone\u2019s political beliefs about Israel and place the Middle Eastern studies department into academic receivership, among other changes.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration does not restore funding as a result of the concessions. In April, it suspends additional National Institute of Health grants to Columbia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/10\/trump-columbia-consent-decree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposes placing<\/a> the school under federal control through a consent decree.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 25<\/b>, masked Department of Homeland Security agents arrest R\u00fcmeysa \u00d6zt\u00fcrk on a sidewalk in Somerville, Massachusetts, near Tufts University, where she is a graduate student, and detain her at the same immigration jail in Louisiana as Khalil. The apparent cause of her arrest is an opinion essay she co-authored in the Tufts student newspaper criticizing the university\u2019s response to protests against Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Dramatic video of \u00d6zt\u00fcrk\u2019s arrest goes viral and more than two dozen Jewish groups, including J Street, Bend the Arc and the New Israel Fund, file a legal brief supporting her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArresting, detaining, and potentially deporting \u00d6zt\u00fcrk does not assist in eradicating antisemitism. Nor was that the government\u2019s apparent purpose,\u201d the brief states. \u201cThe government instead appears to be exploiting Jewish Americans\u2019 legitimate concerns about antisemitism as a pretext for undermining core pillars of American democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration will eventually strip many hundreds of international students of their visas, though most are directed to leave the country without being arrested. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/4\/18\/us-revokes-nearly-1500-student-visas-who-are-the-targets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Estimates<\/a> of the total number of visas canceled range from around 1,400 to more than 4,700, according to the American Immigration Lawyers Association. In late April, the government will temporarily <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/715423\/trump-administration-restores-student-visas-but-impact-on-pro-palestinian-protesters-is-unclear\/\">reverse this move<\/a>, though not for all students.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 27<\/b>, Ted Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/jweekly.com\/2025\/03\/28\/at-bay-area-synagogue-former-house-member-and-ajc-ceo-ted-deutch-lauds-trump-as-partner-in-fighting-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tells<\/a> a Bay Area audience that, \u201cregardless of how anyone feels about President Trump,\u201d that the Jewish community should \u201cacknowledge that the White House is making the fight against antisemitism a priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 28<\/b>, Stew Peters, a far-right podcaster who interviewed Trump\u2019s FBI director, Kash Patel, eight times in 2021 and 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/708811\/stew-peters-deport-jews\/\">calls<\/a> for the mass deportation of Jews in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe absolutely do need a final solution,\u201d Peters says.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>March 31<\/b>, the Trump administration effectively shuts down the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Days later, it will slash grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/culture\/711925\/neh-grant-termination-jewish-yiddish\/\">imperiling<\/a> funding for various Jewish institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a hallmark of authoritarian government to destroy the humanities because you don\u2019t need the thinking public to engage critically with past, present and future,\u201d says Sasha Senderovich, an academic who received a federal grant to translate fiction by Soviet Jewish writers.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading-3 listicle\"><i>\u2013<\/i> April <i>\u2013<\/i><\/h2>\n<p>On <b>April 2<\/b>, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/09\/middleeast\/analysis-netanyahu-trump-tariffs-iran-intl-latam\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announces<\/a> a 17% tariff on Israeli exports to the U.S. as part of a package of \u201creciprocal tariffs\u201d meant to address trade deficits with foreign countries \u2014 one day after Israel eliminated its tariffs on American products. In an Oval Office meeting with Netanyahu days later, Trump will highlight the $4 billion in aid that the U.S. sends Israel \u2014 \u201cCongratulations, by the way, that\u2019s pretty good,\u201d he notes \u2014 before demurring on whether he would lower tariffs on Israel. \u201cMaybe not,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The reciprocal tariffs on all countries will later be paused for 90 days, though a blanket 10% tariff remains.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>April 3<\/strong>, the ADL reverses some of its support for Trump\u2019s campus crackdown with an <a href=\"https:\/\/ejewishphilanthropy.com\/we-must-fight-for-jewish-students-and-our-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">essay<\/a> by Greenblatt in eJewishPhilanthropy. \u201cIf we sacrifice our constitutional freedoms in the pursuit of security, we undermine the very foundation of the diverse, pluralistic society we seek to defend,\u201d Greenblatt writes.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>April 6<\/b>, a <i>Politico<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/04\/06\/project-2025-project-esther-university-crackdown-plans-00272750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> finds that the Trump administration has moved to implement 27 of 47 policy recommendations in Project Esther, the Heritage Foundation\u2019s plan to counter antisemitism. The plan focuses exclusively on purported left-wing antisemitism related to Israel, and internal <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/news\/680626\/project-esther-heritage-jewish-conspiracy-antisemitism\/\">documents<\/a> obtained by the <i>Forward<\/i> show that the mostly non-Jewish authors blamed George Soros and JB Pritzker, the Jewish governor of Illinois, for rising antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>April 8<\/strong>, the American Jewish Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.org\/news\/ajc-statement-on-university-funding-cuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>funding cuts to universities should be a \u201clast resort\u201d when fighting campus antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>April 9<\/b>, the Department of Homeland Security <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/711241\/dhs-says-it-is-monitoring-immigrants-social-media-for-antisemitic-activity\/\">announces<\/a> that it will begin monitoring the social media accounts of visa applicants for \u201cantisemitic activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/707128\/mike-huckabee-israel-senate-confirmation\/\">confirms<\/a> Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, as ambassador to Israel. Huckabee is a Baptist minister and evangelical hard-liner who has made dozens of trips to Israel since the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>April 10<\/b>, Trump nominates Yehuda Kaploun as the U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism. Kaploun, a conservative businessman affiliated with Chabad, had raised money for Trump\u2019s campaign. The announcement on Truth Social was met with many antisemitic replies.<\/p>\n<p>On <b>April 12<\/b>, a leaked draft of an executive order <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/news\/714130\/trump-antisemitism-envoy-state-rubio\/\">proposes eliminating<\/a> the role of U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism in favor of a \u201cglobal Jewish affairs coordinator\u201d housed in a new Israel-Palestine office.<\/p>\n<p>Days later, Rubio will announce his own reorganization of the State Department that <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2025\/04\/state-department-shake-up-keeps-antisemitism-office-in-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retains<\/a> the special envoy role but moves it from a human rights office to one focused on \u201cforeign and humanitarian affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steve Witkoff, Trump\u2019s friend and senior diplomatic negotiator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/what-to-know-about-the-start-of-negotiations-between-iran-and-the-u-s-under-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meets in Oman<\/a> with Iranian officials to begin negotiations over U.S. sanctions and the country\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>Trump named Witkoff, a real estate investor and golf buddy, to be his special envoy to the Middle East in November. Witfkoff had <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/fast-forward\/654465\/steve-witkoff-trump-jewish-golf-assassination-real-estate\/\">served<\/a> as an unofficial liaison to Jewish business leaders during Trump\u2019s campaign for president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a huge imbalance between the Iranian side and the American side,\u201d says Karim Sadjadpour, a fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. On \u201cthe Iranian side you have several Iranian diplomats who have been thinking deeply and negotiating these issues for two decades.
