David Goodman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rabbi Sharon Brous was growing increasingly alarmed at the Trump administration\u2019s strong-arm tactics, like its <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/31\/us\/trump-administration-harvard-funding.html\">attacks on higher-education<\/a>funding and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/20\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-deal-trump-executive-order-withdrawn.html\">bullying of law firms<\/a>, all in the name of protecting Jews.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So early last month, she delivered an impassioned sermon titled \u201cI Am Not Your Pawn\u201d to her Los Angeles congregation. Hours later, the next shoe dropped. Immigration agents began <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/10\/us\/trump-rubio-khalil-columbia-student-protests.html\">detaining activists and foreign students<\/a> who had been involved in pro-Palestinian protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is not going to protect Jews,\u201d Rabbi Brous said in an interview. \u201cWe\u2019re being used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Across the country, American Jews have watched with alarm or enthusiasm as an effort to address campus unrest over the war in Gaza has transformed into a campaign to deny elite universities billions of dollars in funding, to press major law firms into pro bono work on \u201cantisemitism\u201d and to deport foreign students even tangentially involved in the protests last spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe have to combat antisemitism as vigorously as we can,\u201d said Matt Brooks, the chief executive of the Republican Jewish Coalition, adding that with President Trump in office, there is \u201ca new sheriff in town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The divisions mirror those that have long split Jewish communities and have grown deeper since the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, and the broad campus protests that followed Israel\u2019s devastating response in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But where most Jews share concerns about antisemitic speech in some of the protests, many within the community have become convinced that things may have gone too far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/us\/politics\/tufts-ice-crackdown.html\">video of plainclothes immigration agents<\/a> surprising and arresting a Turkish graduate student at Tufts University on the streets of Somerville, Mass., had particularly disturbing resonance for some in the Jewish community. The student, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/29\/us\/rumeysa-ozturk-tufts-student-detained.html\">Rumeysa Ozturk<\/a>, had co-written <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tuftsdaily.com\/article\/2024\/03\/4ftk27sm6jkj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an opinion essay<\/a> for a student newspaper demanding the university take a stand against Israel\u2019s war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For many in a community that has suffered more than its share of unjust arrests, disappearances, deportations and deadly violence over the centuries, the video evoked painful memories from Jewish history. That it was done in the name of defending Jews made it worse. Two pro-Israel groups, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/01\/us\/israel-gaza-student-protests-canary-mission.html\">Canary Mission<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/betarus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Betar<\/a>, have even been involved in singling out pro-Palestinian protesters to target.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI stood up. I was sitting down. I stood up involuntarily,\u201d said Orna Guralnik, an Israeli American clinical psychologist and therapist, describing her reaction to watching the video. \u201cIt\u2019s outrage and fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Such arrests have \u201cwoken people up to the cynical way that the fight against antisemitism is used,\u201d added Dr. Guralnik, who has gained fame with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/22\/arts\/television\/couples-therapy-tv-show.html\">her television show \u201cCouples Therapy<\/a>.\u201d \u201cIt contrasts everything that a liberal person believes in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her practice, she said her American Jewish patients were \u201cconfused and really conflicted.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though the federal crackdown has so far targeted critics of Israel, some think the Trump administration\u2019s actions uncomfortably echo previous eras of bigoted nationalism that gave way to overt antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cFind me a moment in history when Jews anywhere benefited from a mix of rampant nationalism and repression,\u201d wrote the journalist Matt Bai <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/04\/01\/adl-jonathan-greenblatt-jewish-palestinian-removal\/?pwapi_token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJyZWFzb24iOiJnaWZ0IiwibmJmIjoxNzQzNDgwMDAwLCJpc3MiOiJzdWJzY3JpcHRpb25zIiwiZXhwIjoxNzQ0ODYyMzk5LCJpYXQiOjE3NDM0ODAwMDAsImp0aSI6IjMwZGJiMzBhLTBmZjQtNDFiZC05NDM5LTc0ODI1Y2VhZDMwOSIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lndhc2hpbmd0b25wb3N0LmNvbS9vcGluaW9ucy8yMDI1LzA0LzAxL2FkbC1qb25hdGhhbi1ncmVlbmJsYXR0LWpld2lzaC1wYWxlc3Rpbmlhbi1yZW1vdmFsLyJ9.9UNgEdWT04z9kajP9SybRxOaRoA7_doK0cVqReiOiQU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a Washington Post opinion piece<\/a> on Tuesday. \u201cYou\u2019ll be looking awhile.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By saying that the harsh actions of the federal government have been in the name of protecting the Jewish community, the Trump administration has, intentionally or not, put a spotlight on Jews that makes many uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnytime you put Jews in the middle on an issue, it\u2019s not good for the Jews,\u201d said Jonathan Jacoby of the Nexus Project, a progressive Jewish group that has been searching for a way to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/10\/us\/politics\/anti-zionism-antisemitism.html\">combat antisemitism without suppressing political<\/a> debate. \u201cThat\u2019s a classic antisemitic position that antisemites like to put Jews. So they can be scapegoated.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the same time, the Trump administration continues to enjoy the backing of many Jewish groups, including those in the mainstream of social and political life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Anti-Defamation League, which for more than a century has worked to combat antisemitism, quickly put out <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ADL\/status\/1898918587437338827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a statement<\/a> in support of the arrest last month of an activist at Columbia University, Mahmoud Khalil, saying his detention \u201cserves as a deterrent to others who might consider breaking the law on college campuses or anywhere.\u201d The statement said it assumed Mr. Khalil would be given \u201cdue process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Khalil, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/28\/nyregion\/mahmoud-khalil-deportation-case-hearing.html\">legal permanent resident from Syria with a pregnant American wife<\/a>, has not been charged with a crime. He has been held for nearly three weeks in a facility in Louisiana, where he was taken after his arrest on March 8 in New York.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-11\">The Orthodox Union, an umbrella organization representing religious Jews, has been broadly supportive of the Trump administration\u2019s actions. In a statement, its executive vice president, Rabbi Moshe Hauer, called for the fight against the \u201canarchy, hate, intimidation, and violence that have infected the campuses\u201d to be carried out \u201cthe American way, firmly, resolutely, legally.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-11\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Brooks, of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said that the answer to antisemitism cannot be doing nothing and called the notion that the federal government\u2019s actions put American Jews in any greater danger \u201cabsolutely absurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On the streets of American cities with large and diverse Jewish communities, feelings have been much more ambivalent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky, who leads a socially progressive but religiously Conservative Jewish synagogue in Manhattan, said he had been stopped days ago on the sidewalk by a congregant who expressed how distressed she was that \u201cpeople are being disappeared from street corners in the name of fighting antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy community is very, very skeptical of the genuineness of the administration\u2019s antisemitism rhetoric,\u201d Rabbi Kalmanofsky said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think that the Jewish people are the worse for the wear if the foundations of a constitutional order and civil rights and civil liberties and higher education are diminished,\u201d he said, referring to attacks on the legal system and universities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Amy Spitalnick, chief executive of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, a pro-democracy group, said she also doubted the motivation behind the push to combat antisemitism because it has involved the selective application of due process rights based on people\u2019s identities and beliefs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s about exploiting concerns about antisemitism to undermine democracy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But saying so publicly has been an occasionally fraught experience.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Kalmanofsky posted on Facebook his objection to the treatment of Mr. Khalil, not because he agreed with the activist\u2019s views on Israel, which he said he finds objectionable, but because his arrest represented a potential threat to everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf this legal resident can be arrested and deported for exercising First Amendment rights, then anyone can,\u201d he wrote, offering \u201ckudos\u201d to the federal judge in the case who blocked the deportation and is also a member of his synagogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The at-times heated discussion over his post surprised the rabbi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe correct question is does America benefit from him being here,\u201d one commenter replied, speaking of Mr. Khalil. \u201cIf the answer is no, then he should be deported.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Los Angeles, Rabbi Brous of IKAR, a nondenominational Jewish congregation, lamented that for many people, Jewish or not, it has become difficult to hold two competing ideas at the same time, and far easier to retreat into defined ideological camps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She said she wanted to be clear that two things were true: \u201cThere is a real antisemitism problem in our time and the universities have become very fertile ground\u201d for its normalization. And, she added, this administration\u2019s attacks \u201cdo not emerge from a genuine desire to keep Jews safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat may feel today like a welcomed embrace is actually putting us at even greater danger,\u201d she said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ikar.org\/events\/i-am-not-your-pawn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in her sermon on March 8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of her congregants, Shifra Bronznick, watched online from New York, and it resonated deeply with her.
