{"id":10104,"date":"2025-03-20T20:43:12","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T20:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jewishpublicaffairs.org\/?p=10104"},"modified":"2025-03-20T20:58:36","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T20:58:36","slug":"jewish-council-for-public-affairs-condemns-executive-order-to-dismantle-the-u-s-department-of-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jewishpublicaffairs.org\/press-release\/jewish-council-for-public-affairs-condemns-executive-order-to-dismantle-the-u-s-department-of-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Jewish Council for Public Affairs Condemns Executive Order to Dismantle the U.S. Department of Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to President Donald Trump\u2019s executive order calling on the Secretary of Education to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/jewishpublicaffairs.org\/team\/amy-spitalnick\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Spitalnick<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CEO of the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/jewishpublicaffairs.org\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish Council of Public Affairs,<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released the following statement:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPresident Trump simply does not have the authority to unilaterally dismantle the Department of Education &#8211; which will undermine the rights of students across the country without effective federal oversight and coordination. It will inevitably lead to more discrimination, posing a direct threat to the safety of Jewish \u2013 and so many other \u2014 students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Trump Administration claims to prioritize the fight against antisemitism, it has, in reality, repeatedly taken steps to gut the very tools we need to protect Jewish students. By dramatically cutting &#8211; and now seeking to shutter &#8211; the DOE\u2019s Office of Civil Rights, which investigates questions of campus safety and civil rights, this administration is abandoning our students. No other agency can effectively play the same role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe should also be clear that this executive order is part of a broader push to dramatically weaken our democracy, civil service, and academic institutions.
